CAKE Byte - the big O
Ah - the female orgasm. We can have them backwards, forwards, multiple times, internal, external, non-squirting and squirting, in our sleep, at a moment's notice and for hours at a time. When it comes to variety, women definitely have the boys topped in the O category! But alas - where can you go for some straight-up, straight-forward information on our special gift? To CAKE of course. We are giving you the 411 on the big O.

So they say we have 4 physical phases when it comes to "coming"- excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution - oh how droll. However, taken as a whole, it seems that we do not differ from the boys save for one key distinction - girls have a much better shot at having multiple orgasms!

Here's how it works:

When a woman gets "excited", the blood rushes to her nether-regions and other parts of her body. A woman's sexual response cycle begins with either physical or psychological stimulation, or both. Physical includes the obvious to the direct, whereas psychological stimulation may include thoughts of past sexual encounters and sexy fantasies. Our nipples become erect, our breasts enlarge, our labia swells, the clitoris gets bigger and surprise, surprise our vaginas get lubricated. At the same time, our heart rates increase, and our muscles tense up.

When stimulation continues (anything from direct clitoral attention to engaging in some fine dirty talk), we will enter the somewhat ironically named "plateau" phase, where things get good. This is when we are in all of our luscious glory. When done right, we can last through this phase for as long as it feels fabulous. Fantasies run through our heads, we tell our partners not to stop or to move over just a bit, we sometimes moan, we sometimes groan, we bite our lips, and we are thoroughly in it. Plus - yippee - our breasts continue to enlarge and our clitorises continue to engorge!

Important note: Women's capacity to ejaculate gets a little lost in this 4-stage model. Ejaculation, usually associated with the male experience, may sound like it is a finishing touch. But for women, ejaculation is not necessarily combined with contractions - the physical sign of an orgasm. Ejaculation may occur before, after or instead of or along with orgasm. Now how's that for freedom?

The big O during the "orgasm" phase is actually the physical release of sexual tension that has built up. A woman's orgasm is mostly concentrated within the clitoris, vagina and uterus. An orgasm is accompanied by powerful contractions of the uterine, vaginal, anal and lower abdominal muscles. On average, 5 to 12 synchronized contractions occur approximately one second apart. There's a loss of voluntary muscle tone -- almost all women curl their toes at the point of orgasm. And, oh yeah, it feels really, really outstanding, exquisite, remarkable - like waves of pleasure rolling through your body!

Points of controversy:
Interestingly enough, there is evidence that physical stimulation of our privates is not, in all cases, essential for orgasm - some women can take herself through all four stages simply by thinking sexy thoughts, hence the "sweet dreams" phenomenon covered in CAKE Byte 46.0.

Since everything is connected, the debate between vaginal orgasms and clitoral orgasms has more to do with the point of direct stimulation, rather than which part is responsible for the orgasm itself.

Quick tip - if you exercise your Kegel muscles everyday your orgasms will be especially strong. Oh if only it did not have to stop...

But wait - hold your horses - don't bring on the "resolution" phase too soon! Many women have multiple orgasms - which also complicates the clinical 4-phase definition. The multiple orgasm ignores the resolution stage altogether, and keeps you right back on track building to another orgasm - oh yeah.

But alas, the final phase, comes to us all, and a woman's body eventually has to return to an unexcited state. Now, that was good, but we still may not be ready to turn in for the night! Women tend to have a shorter resolution period than men - meaning we might only need to take a couple minutes break before we are ready to start up again. One orgasm for the night is good, but so are two, and three, and so on, and so on...

Now boys and girls, go explore your potential and don't forget to tell CAKE about it.
