CAKE's mission is to take the traditional, the staid, the predominantly male focused and flip it around in the female direction - take it out of the old and into the new. For instance, the "dungeon" is a conventionally forbidden place to female patrons, but yet, many women have fantasies and desires that integrate role-play, domination and submission into our everyday sexual lifestyles. Furthermore, ironically - for a place that feels so male focused, it is women who control the dungeon experience. The mistresses are the purveyors of the "scene" - whether it be for pleasure or for pain. For CAKE’s "POWER" event last week, we took the B+D+S+M out of the underground dungeon, where it is inaccessible to women, and brought it out in the open for CAKE members to explore.

Why is it that certain sexual experiences are traditionally off limits to women? Is it because in a traditionally antiquated world, female sexual exploration is confined to the private space, while men’s sexuality is publicly celebrated and exploited, thus maintaining the status quo power dynamic? Thankfully, as we move towards equality, the lines are successfully being blurred to incorporate female sexuality in the public dialogue, and mainstream representations and opportunities for women to explore and express our sexuality are growing. More importantly, women are not waiting for society to catch on - we are taking it upon ourselves to represent our own desires and our own realities. In the end, it is up to every woman to decide what her own boundaries are, but without the access to opportunity - the choice is moot.

We are talking about representing real life, real women here - not the same old, same old exploitation of women for male pleasure. There are some businesses and people out there right now taking advantage of female sexuality as a trend, labeling the same convoluted male dominated philosophies of sexuality as "female friendly." More than just a harmless gimmick, this type of misrepresentation puts forth the idea that female sexuality is a fad, missing the genuine point that women are now more than ever forcefully and actively pursuing sexual exploration and pleasure in their personal lives in a new way. The sustainability and adequate representation of this movement must not be undermined by shallow ideas of female sexuality as a means to male fantasy fulfillment, nor a tragic Greek theater piece just waiting to be playacted.

Sexuality is about evolution, progress and ultimately pleasure. Women will direct this progress to places we have yet to foresee and witness. A clear and articulated representation of this was exhibited at "POWER" through the actualization of demonstrating a need and acting on it. Women asked for our fantasies of role-play to come to life and we deliriously walked away emPOWERed to integrate those experiences into our daily sexual lifestyle.
